The Money Mindset Book that’s John’s book of the year.
For six years now, John has chosen his book of the year. As a prolific reader, John has read more than a thousand business and personal development books. (You can find his top 100 best business books here).
Previous books of the year include Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker, They Ask You Answer by Marcus Sheridan and Deep Work by Cal Newport.
With the financial clouds gathering and a potential recession on the horizon, John’s book of the year for 2022 is a money mindset book – The Psychology of Money, by Morgan Housel. John first heard Housel on a podcast, making the bold claim that Warren Buffett was NOT the most successful investor of all time. Regular listeners will know that John is a HUGE Buffett fanboy, so how did Morgan Housel journey from slagging off the Oracle of Omaha, to becoming John’s book of the year?
By talking a LOT of sense.
If you’ve ever said that you’re “not good with money”, “not a numbers person”, or “I could never be rich”, then this is the money mindset book for you. Sorting out how you think about wealth, personal finance and investing will sort out how you act in those areas too.
Regular listeners to the ALB Podcast will notice a lot of crossover between our recurring conversations, and several of Morgan Housel’s takeaways from the Psychology of Money.
Stop the Goalposts moving – “Most people will at some point in their life, earn a salary or have a sum of money, sufficient to cover every reasonable thing they need, and a lot of what they want. The hardest financial skill is getting the goalposts to stop moving, but it’s one of the most important. If expectations rise with results, there is no logic in striving for more, because the taste of having more, more money or power and prestige increases ambition faster than satisfaction.”
Warren Buffett’s superpower? Time. – “He didn’t panic and sell during the 14 recessions he’s lived through. He didn’t sully his business reputation. He didn’t attach himself to one strategy, one worldview or one passing trend. He didn’t rely on other people’s money, and he didn’t burn himself out and quit or retire. He survived. Survival gave him longevity and longevity investing consistently from age 10 to (at least) age 89 is what made compounding work wonders.”
My ideal job description is the ultimate financial freedom! – “The most powerful common denominator of happiness was simple. A strong sense of controlling one’s life is a more dependable predictor of positive feelings of well-being than anything objective. More than your salary, more than the size of your house. More than the prestige of your job. Control over doing what you want, when you want, with the people you want to, is the broadest lifestyle variable that makes people happy.”
Wealth is what you don’t see – “Money’s greatest intrinsic value is freedom. But we can’t measure this using bank accounts or brokerage statements. So we rely on outward appearances to gauge financial success: cars, homes, Instagram photos. But the truth is that wealth is what you don’t see. Wealth is the nice cars not purchased. The diamonds not bought. The watch not worn, the clothes forgone and the first-class upgrade declined. Wealth is financial assets that haven’t yet been converted into the stuff you see.”
