How to find your niche in business

Tom Edwards was made redundant from his dream job in 2020. After he was persuaded to launch his own business, he did just that – by sending an email to TV chef Rick Stein. When that worked, he did the same with the biggest client he could think of: BBC One’s The One Show, winning that gig, too!

What followed was a year or so of Tom saying yes to every opportunity that came his way. When Tom met with John at the end of 2021, he was busy but burned out. Successful, but stressed to the eyeballs. John helped Tom see that he needed to find his niche in business – by saying yes to everyone, Tom had become a generalist: working on high-profile prime-time TV shows, as well as doing £50 gigs for the smallest of small businesses.

Through the One Percent Club, we helped Tom to niche down, and separate his “prize pumpkins” from his rotten ones. The more Tom niched, the more success he had – and the more he needed to start saying “no” to more jobs. Over time, his “hell yeah” goalposts moved, and he ended up turning down the opportunity to work with a company that, just 12 months earlier, would have been Tom’s dream client.
