What is 1% Improvement?
Sir Dave Brailsford, team director at Team GB and Team Sky pioneered a technique he referred to as the “aggregation of marginal gains”.
While everyone else is focused on becoming world-class at a small number of things (like building bigger muscles, improving stamina and making the bikes more efficient and reliable), Dave and his team would break down the big, unachievable goal (winning the Tour de France or an Olympic gold medal) into each individual element that could help or hinder them – and look to improve each of those elements by just one per cent. As Brailsford said in 2012: “The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike and then improved it by one per cent, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together again.”
The bike went into a wind tunnel to improve aerodynamics by one per cent. The team used antibacterial hand gel to cut down illness and infections by one per cent. The team bus was redesigned to improve recuperation by one per cent. When dust was found accumulating on the floor of the mechanic’s truck, the floor was painted pristine white so it would be noticed one per cent quicker.
Psychologists teased out one per cent improvements in the athletes’ mindset. He redesigned the team’s training suits and helmets to make them one per cent more comfortable, reduce friction by one per cent, wick sweat away one per cent better, and reduce air drag by one per cent.
Sir Dave went hunting for each and every one of the team’s weaknesses. With each one, he saw that desired one per cent improvement and went hunting for the next “marginal gain” to be had. A culture of 1% Improvement is how Team Sky won six out of seven Tour de France competitions, while Team GB notched up 42 Olympic cycling medals in four games, including 24 golds.
How do you measure 1% Improvement?
For most small businesses, accurately measuring 1% improvement is tough. Instead, it’s more of a crude “is this better?” mindset, where you improve things a little each week – effectively playing Winner Stays On.
It’s about getting 1% better at selling, increasing your profit margins by 1%, and being 1% more focused. It’s about doing 1% more marketing, reducing wastage by 1%, and training your staff to be 1% more effective.
Each week, tick off a simple 1% improvement in your finances, mindset, learning, networking, communications, copywriting, negotiation and people management. Get 1% more people seeing your ads, persuade 1% more of them to click on the ad, get 1% more of them to sign up for your lead magnet, and then increase your email open rates by 1%.
Get 1% more people buying, spending 1% more money on 1% more items. Reduce your refunds or cancellations by 1%. Get customers taking upsells 1% more often, returning 1% more often, and referring 1% more of their friends.
Collect 1% more testimonials and 1% more reviews. Interact 1% more often with your social network, and create an Offer They Can’t Refuse that is 1% better than what you’re doing right now.
Do just one of those things every week (or even every month), with a tiny 1% improvement, and watch 1% Rule exponentially compound those gains:
What is the 1% Rule?
James Clear, author of the amazing book Atomic Habits shared this chart on his blog, highlighting the compound effect of a year’s worth of either constant, never-ending improvement, or constant, never-ending decline.
The upward trajectory of that exponential 1% growth, compounded over a year is plain to see: three-hundred and sixty-five 1% improvements (compounded) equals a 37.78 multiplier in improvement.
Read that again. We’re not talking about a mere 37% improvement (which would be more than acceptable for many businesses) after a year. We’re talking about an almost 37 TIMES (3,678%) improvement.
Conversely, if you allow things to get a tiny bit worse each day, that compounds too – and those three-hundred and sixty-five 1% deteriorations lead to a 97% reduction in performance.
Marginal improvements (or deteriorations) day-to-day, but over the long term? Well, that’s where tiny hinges really do swing big doors. Would you rather be 37 times better, or 97% worse off? The choice is yours, and it’s a choice you make every day.
Now, whilst James Clear opted for a fairly big task of a daily 1% improvement (including weekends, Bank Holidays and the day the new season of Ozark landed on Netflix), I don’t set the bar anywhere near as high.
Instead, I aim for what Clear calls an “easy, consistent habit” – one that is “so easy to stick to, you can’t say no” – stacking up ONE, 1% improvement in your business each week.
That’s it. One easy, consistent habit – to improve your business 1% each and every week. Let’s start finding those 1% wins next, shall we?
